Engage 08: Reports for Stations

Stations have access to three types of reports as well as use of the tools to collect information specific for their region. Each of these options is outlined below.

↓ Monthly Usage Analysis
↓ Select A Candidate Monthly Trends Report
↓ Select A Candidate State Reports
↓ Comprehensive Election Trends Report
↓ Report Features within Select A Candidate and Idea Generator

Monthly Usage Analysis (Select A Candidate)

The Select A Candidate tool saw heavy usage throughout the election cycle. With the election now behind us, we are able to gain some insight into how and when this tool was used. The slides below illustrate usage of Select A Candidate from December 2007 through November 2008 (see "Note about November" in the Findings list below) in the following contexts:

All syndicated use:
This refers to all places on the internet that embedded the tool using an iframe or pop-up window. Essentially, all instances except for its original placement on Minnesota Public Radio.
American Public Media
This slide shows all use of the tool on American Public Media or on sites where the tool was embedded without a custom URL (i.e. sites other than public radio/broadcasting sites).
A variety of station sites
Five stations (KPCC, WCPN, WVXU, WUNC and WFPL) illustrate a representative trajectory of use with respect to the election year's political seasons. In each of these slides, an asterisk marks the date of that station's state primary.
Findings:
  • The typical usage pattern for stations is fairly consistent in terms of predictable peaks and valleys. Each station sees their usage peak in the days/month leading up to their market's primary election/caucus date and then drop off until shortly before the November election.
  • The Select A Candidate tool was used very heavily in the month leading up to November 4th - particularly in the last few days prior to the election.
  • Note about November: The slides all show two values for November usage. The darker marker/line shows the actual total for the month of November, but this total contains data for only four days — the first three days of November and November 4 (election day) itself. The lighter marker shows the extrapolated monthly total for November if this level of daily usage were sustained throughout 30 rather than four days.
  • Although the few days prior to the election are not accurate indicators for usage sustained throughout an entire month, it does illustrate that despite a long election season with abundant informational avenues, users are still interested in comparing their views with those of the candidates right up to the final hours of the campaigns.

Report Features within Select A Candidate and Idea Generators

In addition to the reports above, there are some features built into the Select A Candidate and Idea Generator tools that allow you to access information about the audience in your region.

  • In Select A Candidate, you can compare your results with summary results on a variety of demographics including state. This allows you to see the summary results for any state you choose.
  • In the Idea generators, you can use the “Map View” to zoom in to see responses only from your geographic area.
