There are five (5) new fundraising General Fundraising Segments for Spring 2010 that can be dropped into pitch breaks, or used as transitions coming out of The Story. General Fundraising Segments Rundown:

"I'm Dick Gordon, host of The Story. You know about half the guests I talk to on the program are people who write in or call with their story. The truth is we couldn't do what we do without your help. We also couldn't do what we do without your support for public radio. This is the time of year when we ask that you consider how much programs like The Story mean to you — and then make a contribution - your way of keeping the stories coming… Thanks for listening and for your support."

"Hi I'm Dick Gordon host of The Story — for me, public radio has always been a way to learn about the world and what's going on around us. It's really only when you hear the stories of other people, that you can genuinely understand them. It's my job - our job to do this in a way that's both interesting and informative. Your part in this, goes a bit beyond just listening. We need your support. During weeks like this - your public radio station is asking for your contribution to keep the stories coming. So thanks for listening and for helping out."

IN: "I'm Dick Gordon from The Story…
OUT "…and again, thanks." +music

"I'm Dick Gordon from The Story and I'd like to say thank you. Thank you for listening and thank you for giving me the opportunity to speak with so many different people whose lives have been transformed by the news –

Cut - "This was not just a summer lark - I was going to be involved with this struggle for the rest of my life."

About half of our guests are suggested by listeners who've found unique stories that need to be told.

Cut - "Watching a monkey troop is surprisingly similar to watching a team of consultants steal each other's projects stab each other in the back. Pretty much everything else human nature is derived from you can see in a monkey troop."

Public radio works when everybody gets involved. People tell stories - listen - and a couple times a year make a contribution. So please consider getting in touch now and making a donation to this public radio station - and again - thanks."

IN: "I'm Dick Gordon, host…
OUT: …contribute today." + music

"I'm Dick Gordon, host of The Story. As the pundits examine the ups and downs of unemployment rates, market numbers and try to forecast when the economy is going to turn around - we've been talking to people whose lives are changing.

Cut - "I don't' have a lot of equity, my car is 12 years old…" -"If someone asks us what's your investment in your business my simple answer is all my money and all my life." — "So, I went to mom. When your back's against the wall you go to your relatives. She wasn't so excited about it, I wasn't real excited about it, but she said sure."

This is the time of year when we ask you to do your part and make a contribution to this public radio station. It's a simple, small act that will help sustain this station and programs like The Story. Thank you for choosing to contribute today.

"Hi I'm Dick Gordon from The Story . I just wanted to say thanks. Thanks for listening - and thanks for your support. By listening to other people tell their stories, we all get a better appreciation of what's important in life. And making a contribution is your way to keep those lines of communication open. When the economy turned all our worlds upside down, your support helped keep this Public Radio station strong. I'm asking you to stay with us. Your help makes a difference to the work we do and the stories we all hear. So thanks."

Fall 2009 Fundraising Segments

Download Printable Version

The Story is fundraiser friendly every single week! Simply consult the weekly DACS or rundown on ContentDepot for that week's pledge cutaways. There's no waiting for the national coordinated fundraising week for a fundraiser friendly clock. You don't have to use outdated evergreen fundraising segments.

To compliment the daily program, we have produced five General Fundraising Segments. Segments 1–3 are about the program, and segments 4 and 5 are about the overall value of public radio.

Note: Segment 5 suggests a "dollar-a-day" contribution.

As listeners have very strong relationships with national program hosts, we encourage you to use these general segments throughout your fundraising schedule, in addition to within The Story. Look for more of these general fundraising segments from other APM hosts on the fundraising support pages of the programs you carry.

A new idea for this fall — use General Fundraising Segments to drive Web pledges when you're not pitching live. For example: run the new General Fundraising Segments from Dick during every break in The Story for 6 weeks (out of a drive). Add a local tag to contribute at your Web site, and bring in incremental additional revenue. Try it with The Story (or any program), and let us know your results.

Segments include:

Segment 1 – 0:48
Segment 2 – 0:48
Segment 3 – 0:23
Segment 4 – 0:23
Segment 5 – 0:59

SEGMENT 1: STORY_Fall_2009_Fundraiser 1 (:48)

IN Music + "Hi, I'm Dick Gordon host of The Story…
OUT: by making a financial contribution right now, here's how, and thanks."

Hi, I'm Dick Gordon, host of The Story. Here at public radio our goal is pretty simple: To bring you the news and the information that you need every day. Each program has its own style but we all have the same goal: To transport you somewhere, to share stories from all over, to make this world somehow a little more understandable. Now if you don't mind, I'd like to take a moment to talk about what's required to put all that together. Here at our show, The Story, we have producers, and engineers, and IT people and all the expensive audio equipment to maintain. We find guests, and arrange for them to go to radio studios all over the country and overseas as well. It all costs money. Knowing that, I'd like to ask you to help support the programming on this station by making a financial contribution right now. Here's how, and thanks!

SEGMENT 2: STORY_Fall_2009_Fundraiser 2 (:48)

IN Music + "Hi, I'm Dick Gordon host of The Story…
OUT ..here's how you can make a contribution to this station right now, and thanks."

Hi, I'm Dick Gordon host of The Story. Ours is a show that aims to give regular people a chance to tell stories about how they are living out events that we hear about in the news. For example, Joseph Pfeffer is a car dealer in New Jersey who sold cars there for 66 years. He's weathered wars and recessions and depressions but he couldn't survive the credit crunch of 2008. I also talked with a doctor who is in the midst of clinical trials with an artificial pancreas that he helped design. It could help those with diabetes, including his own son. In general, The Story introduces us to people who are living what we read about in the news. And it allows us to understand what's going on through their personal experience. Here's how you can make a contribution to this station right now. And thanks.

SEGMENT 3: STORY_Fall_2009_Fundraiser 3 (:23)

IN Music + "Hi, I'm Dick Gordon host of The Story…
OUT …by making a financial contribution to the station now, and thanks"

Hi, I'm Dick Gordon host of The Story. We bring you conversations with people who could be your neighbors but they're also people who find themselves somehow living out what's happening in the headlines. Every day we introduce you to people who change the way we think about the news, and the way we think about ourselves. Please help support the programming on this station by making a financial contribution right now. And thanks.

SEGMENT 4: STORY_Fall_2009_Fundraiser 4 (:23)

IN Music + "I'm Dick Gordon host of The Story…
OUT …here's someone who can tell you more.

I'm Dick Gordon host of The Story. Someone once told me that public radio is the only place you can find out the truth these days. Well that's kind of a big claim, but I think I know what he meant. It is intelligent, thought provoking and often moving if you do it properly. If you value what you hear on this public radio station, well now's the time to make your support count. Here's someone who can tell you more.

SEGMENT 5: STORY_Fall_2009_Fundraiser 5 (:59)

IN Music + "Hi, I'm Dick Gordon …
OUT … and make a pledge now, thanks."

Hi, I'm Dick Gordon. For many of us, these are days that we are taking a long hard look at our priorities, evaluating what we have in our life that's really important, that matters. And when you stop and think about it, public radio is one of those things that does matter. This public radio station provides you with the tools, the information, the opinion you need to navigate these times. When you support public radio at the dollar-a-day level, that's about half the price of a cup of coffee. You get reports, updates and valuable information from across the globe and from around the corner, you help support programs like Marketplace®, Morning Edition and you help support programs like ours, The Story. I hope you'll tune into The Story, and I hope you'll take a couple of minutes now to call in your support. As you consider the things that are important to you, remember how much you depend on public radio and make a pledge now. Thanks.
