This week on Marketplace Money, mortgage rates have had an incredible drop recently, and many real estate experts think that this fact, along with low home prices—makes it a good time for potential home buyers. But there's one huge hurdle standing in many people's way, getting a loan from a bank. This week Marketplace Money host Tess Vigeland goes to an open house to find out what people are saying about the home buying process. And banks are under growing pressure to go beyond temporary interest-rate cuts for strapped homeowners, and actually write off part of the loan amount to help avert foreclosure. Community activists say that mortgage modifications are more likely to fail if banks don't forgive part of the principal, but banks contend such loan reductions could subject them to more losses. Marketplace's Senior Correspondent Bob Moon reports. And we answer listener questions in the weekly segment, Getting Personal.
