Public Radio Classical Music Audience Profile

Public radio classical music attracts people with a variety of interests and values. These listeners are engaged in their communities, and they enjoy an assortment of activities.

In general, public radio classical music listeners are:

  • 47% female, 53% male.
  • Well educated. 63% have earned a bachelor's degree or higher.
  • Married (63%) – 17% more likely than the general U.S. adult population.
  • More than twice as likely to go to live theater.
  • 89% more likely than the average U.S. adult to attend a music performance other than rock, country, or classical.

Civic-Minded

  • 7 in 10 vote in federal, state, or local elections – 48% more likely than the general U.S. adult population.
  • 21% have called or written to a local, state or national level politician in the last year, more than twice as likely as the general population.
  • 22% attended a public meeting on town or school affairs – 56% above the national average.
  • 15% served on a committee for some local organization, more than twice as likely as the general population.

Curious and Cultured

  • 32% enjoy cooking for fun (26% more likely). 47% entertain friends or relatives at home (31% more likely).
  • 26% more likely to exercise on a regular basis.
  • 46% engage in gardening of some kind (37% more likely).
  • 68% flew domestically in the past year (32% more likely); 41% traveled abroad in the past three years (69% more likely).
  • % pursue photography as a hobby (67% more likely).
  • 66% more likely to play a musical instrument.
